What is Nixle?

·        Nixle is a Community Information Service designed to deliver important and timely information to residents and business people in Middletown using the latest technology

·        Nixle is the first authenticated and secure service that connects municipal agencies to residents in real time, delivering information to geographically targeted consumers over their cell phones (via text messages), through e-mails and via Web access. 

·        Nixle is similar in design to Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter only it was specifically designed with public safety in mind and operates using a secure platform

·        The Police Department posts messages through the Nixle website

·        Consumers sign-up to be contacted with alerts by e-mail, cell phone (text messages), Web or through all three channels

·        Messages can be broadcast city-wide or targeted by geographic location

·        Messages can be geographically targeted between ¼ mile to 20 miles outside of the incident location

 

Cost
·        The deployment of this service is free for the City of Middletown
·        Subscription to the service by consumers is free (standard text messaging rates apply)
  

Do I have to register to use Nixle?

Anyone can view information by going to www.nixle.com without registering. However, to customize the information you receive and the locations you receive it from, in addition to receiving information by text message and/or email you must set up an account. Once registered you can personalize your locations and your preferences, making the service fit your needs.

 

Do I have to give my mobile phone number?

No. However, the strength of the Nixle system is the delivery of real-time messages when you’re on the go. The best way to stay up-to-date with important information that could affect you and your family is to receive notifications by e-mail and mobile device.

 

How To Register

(1) Go to www.nixle.com

(2) Click “Register Now”

(3) Create an account by      choosing a UserName and Password

(4) Enter an e-mail address and cell phone number where you would like to receive messages

(5) Enter your address (or a nearby intersection)

(6) Click “Sign Me Up” – and you’re done!

 

How To Customize

(1) Log in at www.nixle.com

(2) Click “Locations”

(3) Click “Add New” to add addresses in the city or around the country.  Is your child away at college?  Do your parents live out of the area?  Keep track of what’s happening near your loved ones and the places you work, live or visit.

(4) Click “Other” to subscribe to Nixle Weather & Nixle Traffic updates.

(5) Click “Settings”and Subscribe to agencies in your area and choose where you want to receive messages.  Adjust which messages by priority level go to your e-mail or cell phone.
